GMA Takes on Radical Unschooling

Have you seen this yet?  Sigh.  I’m certainly not a radical unschooler but I hate to see sensational news stories and reporters with no interest in actually getting the truth in a story.

It always amazes me when reporters interview “educational experts” about unschooling or homeschooling.  Hello.  These people are entrenched in public education for a living.  Are they likely to be fans?  Are they likely to have ANY experience with the subject?  Then they hypothesize on what they think will happen based on their experience with a totally different world.  Pfft.

Just once, I’d like to see one of these shows also include something like an interview with an adult graduate of unschooling.  Years ago, I read an article by an Ivy League professor who had grown up being unschooled in Hawaii.  I can’t find the article but if anybody knows how to find it again, please share it!

Anyway, I can’t say I’m surprised by the job they did.  Homeschooling is not mainstream and unschooling is way less so.  The public loves to look at things it knows nothing about and get outraged and/or talk disapprovingly about it, and this piece will serve that purpose well for the water cooler tomorrow.

What did you think of it?

  1. I did see this and was horribly disappointed in it. We are what I call slightly radical unschoolers and that was a terrible depiction of what life is like. So very disappointing…
